dan: a church in oakland overflowing with concerned neighbors. the community conversation focused dan: lena howland is digging to build a better bay area. >> i'm tired reporter: peter is one of hundreds that gave up their wednesday night to demand answers. this public safety meeting comes a day after a 15-month-old child was hit by shrapnel and an attempted armed robbery. police say two men tried to steal the nanny's purse on her 10:00 a.m. walk with the child. >> i walk around the neighborhood a lot. you know, i greet all my friends

not many people are walking early in the morning. i know i don't want to alone. >> we all went -- we all want to feel safer. reporter: the meeting engage with oakland police officials. >> we've had some violent assaults in broad daylight in residential areas. so people are a i'm here because i want to work together with our community to be part of a solution. reporter: one of the first things we heard in this meeting was a call for more cameras to be peppered throughout these neighborhoods. >> [inaudible] [applause] [applause] >> that is something we are looking at. reporter: robberies are up by 3% this year. particularly impact add --

according to data released tonight. last june, there were 1829 violent crimes reported. this year, 1913. that's an increase of 5%. property crime, burglary, arson, or stealing a car, is down. last year, the department reported nearly 17,000 such crimes. this year, a little over 15,000. a decline of 8%. at tonight's meeting of the police commission, the chief addressed the numbers. >> one of the biggest categories of crime in our city is theft. we are down almost 8% in theft which is 1000 fewer than last year. ama: we've made all of this information available at your fingertips. our abc 7 neighborhood safety tracker. the interactive tool lets you look at crimes where you live and see where they changed over time. there's data for san francisco, oakland, and san jose and we are

adding more cities. you can find it on our website. dan: developing news in sa francisco tonight where the pressure continues for criminal charges to be filed in the walgreens shooting case. benko brown was shot and killed last month by a san francisco store security guard after a physical dispute over suspected shoplifting. dozens of people rallied in front of san francisco district attorney today, calling for da jenkins to change her decision to not file charges. >> his life is more than just what happened to him. the system failed him long before he stepped in the walgreens. dan: the da insists the guard acted in self-defense and there wasn't enough sufficient evidence to go to trial. there have been calls for the state attorney general to step in to investigate as well. other developing news. the los angeles dodgers are making noise tonight for dis-inviting a popular san francisco drag group from the

team's night next month. the dodgers are excluding them to avoid controversy and not distract from the benefits of pride night. the sisters of perpetual indulgence was founded in san francisco in 1977 and has members in cities all over the world including l.a.. ryan curry has more on the backlash from both sides. >> the people who are responding this way to the sisters don't know who we are. reporter: sister roma, a member of the sisters of perpetual indulgence, says wednesday is an emotional day. the los angeles dodgers disinvited the group from being honored at the teams pride night ceremony in june, claiming the group has been a source of controversy. >> people are reacting with hate and it's just unfortunately very typical of the climate that we see today. reporter: the religious advocacy group catholic vote first expressed concerns about the sisters being honored late last week. they say the group mocks real nuns. the sisters of perpetual lin dunn to -- indulgence originated

in the late 70's. they are known for doing charitable work throughout the city. >> we saved lives. our mission has always been to raise money for those who need it. we minister to the sick and feed the hungry. we support queer arts, lgbtq youth. reporter: other catholic groups in florida senator marco rubio called on the dodgers to pull their invite. senator rubio sent a letter to the commissioner saying it would be an outrage and a tragedy if the mlb, in pursuit of modern, secular, and anti-religious values, rebuked that faith in the millions of believing fans who cherish the sport. scott wiener says california sports team should not be influenced by an out-of-state's editor. california is a state that prides itself on honoring the lgbtq community, he says. >> we support the diversity of our community and we support lgbtq people. this is really a very sad day. reporter: following the

announcement, the president of catholic votes said he was pleased by the decision. writing, while we continue to wonder how a group was selected in the first place, this incident should serve as a wake-up call. unchecked corporations have no qualms about exporting people of faith. sister roma wants the dodgers to recognize the charitable work done by the organization. >> it shows that maybe their interest wasn't so much in actually supporting an organization that's iconic and legendary and important to the queer community. reporter: ryan curry, abc7news. dan: our local teams will celebrate pride this baseball season. the giants pride night is june 10. the oakland a's will have their celebration in september. ama: new development's to a story we've been tracking all week. the president of san francisco's board of supervisors wants to pause the plan to extend parking meter hours. sfmta wants to charge for meter parking until 10:00 monday through saturday and add sunday

small business. >> one-on-one business coaching. access to that first investment if they are ready, if they are formalized. they connect -- get access to a $20,000 investment. reporter: they will be incubating and investing in 40 businesses owned by individuals with a criminal record over the next two years. >> juveniles exposed to the system. i work in the system. reporter: people reentering the community after getting out of the system start off with barriers. >> what are my forms of identification? where my staying? is my housing stable reporter: he started his own company in 2021. with the help and support services from eso ventures. >> eso was able to create an environment where there were like-minded entrepreneurs that were forward moving. it's a network of people who have been there and done that that you don't really need to know personally to be able to

ama: new details about prince harry and meghan markle trip to new york city. they were involved in a near catastrophic car chase with proper rotc last night. the nypd and a taxi driver are sharing their perspectives. morgan norwood has more. reporter: what started as an evening honoring meghan markle at a charity gala in new york city ended it was what representatives were prince harry and megan: you're catastrophic to our car chase. a spokesperson says the couple along with megan's mother were pursued by highly aggressive paparazzi in manhattan last on the sidalk. a yellow cab driver says he picked up the couple in a security guard but stopping

short of calling the situation a chase. >> i don't know what happened prior. with me, they were following us. if we made a left, they made a left. they were with us. reporter: you were being tailed. >> yes. reporter: the nypd says there were numerous photographers that meet their transport challenging. the duke and does it -- duchess arrived at their destination and there were no collisions. the nypd is running down reports of some members of the paparazzi having their license plates covered in driving on sidewalks. prince harry and her mom left the ballroom where megan received the women of vision of ward -- award. new york's mayor calling the actions irresponsible. >> the briefing i received, two of our officers could have injured. new york city is different from a small town somewhere. you shouldn't be speeding anywhere but this is a densely populated city.

reporter: prince harry has been outspoken about the security of his family, pointing to similarities between his wife's treatment and the treatment of princess diana. she died in 1997 after a high-speed car chase in paris by paparazzi. >> something we've heard prince harry talk about time and time again. his fear of history repeating itself. obviously this event last night is exactly one of those moments. reporter: abc news, new york. dan: new details emerging about a california father apparently attempting to drive his tesla off of san mateo county cliff with his wife and kids inside. a doctor tumbled down the side of coastline at devil slide back in january. remarkably, patel and their children survive. court records obtained by abc news show patel said that he pulled off the road to check on a possible flat tire when the crash happened. his wife repeatedly told

authorities that her husband deliberately drove off the cliff. patel has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted murder. ama: cyclist participated in a ride of silence. a silent ride to honor those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roads. cyclist met at the kaiser permanente steps in alameda before embarking on their nine mile journey. it was the 21st year for this event. dan: california transportation commission approved a proposal to turn a stretch of highway 37 into a toll road. they will be enforced between sears point and mare island. the plan is to start this in 2027 and the money will help pay for future road improvements. the price is expected to be similar to what drivers would pay to cross one of the bay area. ama: students will be warned if their degree program may be more than a needless expense. the higher education act would apply to 1800 low performing

programs nationwide which often promises salary boost while actually creating student debt and useless degrees. the department of education would pose data from the programs on a public website. programs would have to show that their grads make enough to pay off their debts and the program boosted their endings. this new rule is expected to go into effect next summer. dan: tomorrow, the contra costa affair kicks off. the theme is once upon affair. the four-day event will include livestock exhibits, rides, food, entertainment. fair organizers shared this video. the event runs through the weekend. abc7news joined in on a fun night of trivia. ama: members of our team volunteered for the lucasfilm trivia night which raises money for three bay area charities. the event returns to in person this year at the letterman digital arts campus. dan: several groups participated in a night of food, trivia, prizes. each organization competed to
